The Niger Delta Renaissance Organisation NDRO has called on
the Governor of Rivers state to quickly dissolve the local government councils
foisted on the people of the state by the erstwhile governor of the Rivers
state Chibuike Amaechi.
The group in a press statement signed by the National
Secretary Barr. Kingsley Frank and Publicity Secretary Amakiri Christiana said
the election that brought the Chairmen and councilors was a big slap on the
sensibilities and reasonability of Rivers people orchestrated by the former
governor whose stock in trade was to cause confusion and anarchy.
The group said the present governor allowing such illegitimacy
to go on over a month after coming to power is not in the best interest of
Rivers people who suffered so much under the past administration and his
barrack politics.
The group urged the governor of Rivers state to borrow a leaf
from his Plateau state counterpart who dissolved council chairs elected last
year. “As much as we view the dissolution of the Local government executives
with some reservations, we strongly believe that the Rivers state governor
should do the same especially considering the mischief that surrounded the decision
of the former governor to conduct council polls a week to his hand over day.
The group criticized the former head of the state independent
electoral commission Prof. Augustine Ahiuzo for condescending so low as to
agree with the former governor in his folly. “As much as we have the highest
regards for the erstwhile Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral
Commission Prof. Augustine Ahiuzo, we regret to say that his decision to go
ahead in conducting the most sham elections in the history of Rivers state has
reduced his profile amongst the people of the state. This is not the best way
to ice the cake for someone with the pedigree and acheivements of the former
Vice Chancellor of the Rivers state University of Science and Technology.
Rivers people actually expected something much more than what he did” the group
said.
